The Collagen Controversy: Heavy Metals and Consumer Safety

The rise of collagen supplements

Collagen has become a wellness staple, marketed for skin elasticity, joint comfort and hair. Unusually for the supplement aisle, the core claim isn’t baseless: there is reasonable trial evidence that oral collagen peptides can improve skin. So the more useful question isn’t “does collagen work?” — it’s “is the specific product you’re swallowing every day clean?” Because the supplement market is loosely regulated, purity varies far more than the marketing suggests.

Does collagen actually work? (a fair aside)

Briefly, for balance: according to PubMed, a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of low-molecular-weight collagen peptides found significant improvements in wrinkles, skin elasticity, hydration and barrier function over 12 weeks, with no adverse events (Kim et al., 2022, Journal of Medicinal Food, DOI). Results across the wider literature are mixed and often industry-funded, so this isn’t a miracle — but the ingredient has a plausible, evidence-supported effect. That’s precisely why purity matters: if you’re going to take it daily for months, what else is in the tub should be clean.

Why supplement purity is a legitimate question

Food supplements are not assessed for safety and efficacy before sale the way medicines are. There is no routine pre-market check that a given batch is free of contaminants; the responsibility sits with the manufacturer, and verification largely depends on whether a brand chooses to commission independent testing and publish it. Collagen is often sourced from marine (fish skin/scales) or bovine material, and marine sources in particular can carry trace arsenic as an environmental background — which is exactly why testing, and the type of testing, is worth scrutinising.

What independent testing found

Independent lab testing of samples from two collagen products found a meaningful difference in arsenic, with the other three regulated heavy metals below detection limits in both:

Putting the number in context

It’s important to be precise, because overstating a finding like this creates both a health-literacy problem and a legal one (comparative claims against an identifiable brand can carry defamation risk). The 0.44 ppm figure is a genuine, roughly five-fold increase over the other sample — but it sits within currently applied EU limits for total arsenic in collagen and gelatin, which allow up to 1 ppm under Animal By-Products/Animal Hygiene rules. So it does not, on its own, mean the product breaches a regulatory threshold.

The honest framing is: “notably higher than a previous sample, within current total-arsenic limits, and a reasonable prompt to ask the brand whether they test for inorganic arsenic specifically” — not “this product is dangerous,” which a single total-arsenic data point does not support.

The science: why “inorganic vs organic” is the whole game

Total arsenic is a blunt number, because arsenic comes in two very different toxicological classes. According to PubMed, inorganic arsenic — chiefly the trivalent form — is the well-characterised human carcinogen, binding sulfur-containing proteins and driving oxidative stress, with chronic exposure linked to cancer, cardiovascular and neurological effects (Ganie et al., 2023, Toxicology Research, DOI). Organic arsenic (mainly arsenobetaine, common in seafood and marine-derived products) has traditionally been considered far less harmful.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a total-arsenic result can’t tell you which form you’re looking at — so speciation testing (measuring inorganic arsenic specifically) is the meaningful safety indicator, and it costs more per batch, which is why many brands don’t do it. Second, the “organic is harmless” assumption is now itself under review: according to PubMed, a NIST-led review notes that total arsenic gives inadequate information for risk assessment, and that some organoarsenicals are bioaccessible and cytotoxic rather than inert — reinforcing, not weakening, the case for speciation (Luvonga et al., 2020, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, DOI). For reference, EU limits for inorganic arsenic in food supplements are far stricter than for total arsenic — on the order of 0.1 mg/kg for high-quality products.

Why small amounts still deserve attention

Arsenic accumulates. Even at levels within regulatory limits, a daily supplement is an additional, deliberate exposure on top of dietary sources — and some people already carry a higher background load from rice-heavy diets, certain seafood, or well water in some regions. This isn’t cause for alarm about a single product; it’s an argument for being intentional about anything you take every day, indefinitely, for cosmetic benefit.

How to actually vet a collagen supplement

  • Ask for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the batch you’re buying — not a generic marketing claim.
  • Ask specifically about inorganic arsenic (speciation), not just “heavy-metal tested,” which can mean total arsenic only.
  • Prefer third-party verification (e.g. independent lab certification) over self-declared purity.
  • Consider the source — marine-derived collagen is more likely to carry background arsenic than bovine, so testing transparency matters more there.
  • Be wary of “clinically proven” on the tub — check whether any trial used that product and dose, or just the ingredient class.

The bottom line for consumers

Collagen peptides have real, if modest, evidence behind them — so the sensible worry isn’t whether they work, but what comes with them. Not all supplements are created equal, and third-party testing is a genuinely useful thing to request. Be specific: ask for total and inorganic arsenic results, and treat transparency as a feature worth paying for. A brand that tests properly and shows its working has earned more trust than one relying on a reassuring label.
